"A newly formed school, which is attracting students who say they dropped out of Camden schools because of violence and lack of educational quality, is also attracting unwanted attention from the law," read an article in Life-Net News January 24, adapted from an original in the Courier-Post. "Some of the parents of the unofficial school's 32 mostly Hispanic students are being taken to court for truancy and getting letters from the district threatening to report them to the state Division of Youth and Family Services, according to documents provided by parents."
Note the word "school" in the above paragraph. When I posted the LNN issue online, I had recorded and aired this show, and since some of our Community Educational Resources Network interviewees made a point of saying that their place is not a school, I reworked the piece to exclude the word "school" in references to their place. Now I'll tentatively call it, in light of shows we've made with Robert E Kay MD, an "un-school".
In this episode, we spend some time with the new un-schoolers, the Community Educational Resource Network for Homeschoolers. In the recording, CERNH executive Angel Cordero breathed fire as he told us what drove the network's launch and what moves people to keep joining. Interleaved with his comments are remarks by parents and students. This could be local history in the making, so don't miss it!
